Wood Molding vs Balmer VI Moldings

Wood moldings are divided into products produced in hardwood such as oak or maple and softwood products such as pine. Genuine hardwood molding is expensive because it uses limited forest resources. A comparable hardwood crown molding costs up to 10 times the price of a Balmer VI molding. Softwood moldings, while generally inexpensive, provide only plain patterns or very shallow enrichments and yet still require fine carpentry skills and a great deal of time and care during both installation and finishing.

Balmer VI moldings provide an easy to install, high quality, economical alternative to wood molding. Balmer VI products preserve the depth and definition of detail provided by the Balmer plaster moldings used in hotels, theaters and high-end residential interiors. Yet, Balmer VI molding provides the feel and workability of wood. In terms of overall installed cost, ease of use and finishing and many other important factors, Balmer VI moldings are superior to wood molding for all home installations.

Balmer VI moldings are compared with wood moldings in detail below. Balmer's exclusive polyurethane formulation and unique manufacturing process yield products with qualities no softwood or hardwood molding can match.

Shrinkage & Swelling
Readily shrink and swell with changes in humidity up to 1/16" per foot of length. Do not swell. Shrinkage does not exceed 1/32" per foot of length (half that of wood.)

Fire Safety (for flame spread ratings, lower numbers are safer)
Flame spread rating greater than or equal to 100: very combustible. Flame spread rating less than 75: meet Residential Uniform Building Code Requirements.

Forming
Wood is often stamped or pressed to create shallow decorative details. Cast from a liquid state in flexible silicone moulds which allow superb depth and definition of details.

Water Damage
Readily affected by water and subject to damage. Impervious to water.

Rot & Insect Damage
Readily affected. Not susceptible to rot or insect attack. Provide no food value.

Strength & Flexibility
Especially in molding lengths, relatively easy to crack. Nails often require pre-drilling. Will not crack, excellent overall strength. No pre-drilling required for nails or screws.

Ease of Installation
Require mitering and coping skills.
Split and splinter when nailed or cut. Comparable patterns may be supplied in two or more components.
Easy to install. Miterless System eliminates miter cuts and coping. Easy to lift and handle. One person can install alone. Never split or splinter.

Finish Preparation & Painting
Must be sanded and primed and then require 2 finish coats. No sanding necessary. Supplied fully primed and require only 1 finish coat. May be left primed white as supplied.

Overall Appearance
Best suited to installations where a stained wood finish is required and the high cost of a hardwood molding can be justified. Where moldings are painted, superior to wood moldings.
